How Should Christians Pick A Job Or Career?

Sometimes, we can be deceived into thinking that God only cares about our "spiritual" walk.

But I am learning that couldn't be further from the truth.

Let's look at what God says in his word.

Here is 3 John 1:2 (NIV)

Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.

Even though the Apostle John wrote this, I gather that God also cares about our souls, emotions, our daily lives, and all that concerns us.

I would even think that means our careers.

Most of us, especially as adults, spend the majority of our time working or fulfilling some kind of obligation in the role of an entrepreneur.

The truth is that most of us don't like our jobs.

Mainly, this stems from not being able to be ourselves, low pay, and a bad environment.

This is an issue, even for Christians.

But as Christians, we should have a different lens of looking at a career, job, side hustle, or even starting a business.

From my opinion, this is how I think that Christians should approach picking a job or career.

HOW CHRISTIANS SHOULD PICK A JOB, CAREER, BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY

Here are a few strategies, in my opinion, that we can use to pick career paths but also do things that glorify God.

1) PRAYER

Spend time praying and talking to God.

It is important for us to make God the head of our job search, side hustle venture, or business plans.

Trust God to lead you in every area, including a career path.

2) ANALYZE THE KIND OF PERSON YOU ARE AND WANT TO BE

Look inside yourself for a moment.

Analyze your skills, experiences, values, and belief system.

Consider taking online assessments to analyze your personality, spiritual gifts, and what kind of work best suits you.

Ask friends what they think you are good at, what you are known for.

What do you enjoy doing that you can possibly monetize as a side hustle/business or perhaps transfer into the workplace.

What are skills you learned from other jobs that can transfer into a business opportunity or new employment position.

Ask yourself what kind of person you want to be.

Do you want to work on Sundays, nights, holidays, weekends?

Are you single or married?

Are you an extrovert or introvert?

Do you work better alone or with a group?

You need to consider these things in order to find a position that doesn't take away from your spiritual walk and drain your soul.

3) WHAT ARE THE NEEDS IN THE WORLD?

It is no secret that the people who make the most money are solving the biggest problems.

I have heard several pastors state that God placed us here to solve problems in the world.

I actually agree with that.

Just as God solved our ultimate problem (the need for salvation), we are here on earth for two reasons...

  • To glorify God
  • To help others
We help others but meeting their needs; spiritual, physical, emotional, and financial.

Based on your skills, experiences, talents, etc., what need can you meet in the world?

Whatever need you are willing to meet for others, there will be someone willing to pay you to meet that need.

4) TAKE ACTION

Ultimately, to make a difference in our own personal economy, we have to put in the work.

One of my first suggestions is to write down your skills, talents, what you love to do, and the job/opportunity you are suited for on paper.

Then you have to put in that resume.

Do some applications for that job position.

Try out that side hustle.

Taking action can help bring clarity to what you want and what you don't want.

CONCLUSION

Ultimately, we have to consider impact and our priorities.

In whatever we are doing with reference to a job, side hustle, or business has to reflect God and our values.

So, let us make sure that we honor God and be a blessing to others, whether we are flipping burgers at a fast-food restaurant, cleaning bathroom stalls, or the CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

Our lives should be a reflection of our values and most of all, our relationship with God.

This means that our careers should fall into that category as well.

The Single Hardest Thing About Being A Christian

It's not easy walking the "narrow path." I fall off from that path more than I'd like to admit.  I don't know if you struggle like me, but the faith walk is full of ups and downs.  I'm going to share what I think is the most difficult thing about being a Christian.  THE MOST DIFFICULT THING ABOUT BEING A CHRISTIAN! WALKING IN FAITH  Walking in faith forces you to trust God.  Faith is the expectation that God is going to move on your behalf, even if you have no evidence.  Let's look at a famous example of Abraham and Sarah.  Abraham and Sarah were well beyond child-bearing years.  But God told them they would have a child.  This was not easy to understand.  Yet, we know that Abraham was called the "Father of Faith."   Abraham's real recourse was to trust God, despite the circumstances.  And even Abraham tried to bring God's will to fruition by using Sarah's maid, Hagar.  We look further in Genesis to see Abraham's fai...

Should You Question God?

Where are you, God?  I don't understand... Did I really hear from you, God?   I am sure you have asked these kinds of questions before. .  Honestly, there are times it seems there are more questions than answers.  This begs a bigger question.. SHOULD I QUESTION GOD?  This, in my opinion is two fold.  There is first the practical questions and then the matters of the heart.  First, we have a greater Word with us.  That word is the Bible.  According to 2 Timothy 3:16-17, the Bible helps answer our questions.  All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. This means that the Bible is going to answer our questions. When it comes to our daily lifestyle, the Bible is our teacher.   We have to fill ourselves with God's...
